Bringing home a Goldendoodle means lots of tail wags, zoomies, and goofy grins—but let’s be honest, it can also mean endless energy. If you’re a new puppy parent wondering, “When will my Goldendoodle finally calm down?”, you’re not alone!
Here at KZ Doodles, we’ve raised plenty of goldendoodles, and we totally get it. That high-energy, fun-loving personality is part of what makes Goldendoodles so lovable—but it’s also natural to crave a little peace and quiet now and then.
Let’s talk about what to expect as your Goldendoodle grows, when the energy starts to mellow, and what you can do to help the process along.
Why Are Goldendoodles So Energetic?
Goldendoodles are a mix of two highly intelligent and active breeds—Poodles and Golden Retrievers. That means you’re getting a dog that’s not only smart but full of life and curiosity. This combo makes them excellent companions, but it also means they need regular physical and mental stimulation to stay balanced and well-behaved.
In short: they’re not lazy lap dogs—and that’s part of the fun!
When Do Goldendoodles Start to Calm Down?
Here’s a general timeline to keep in mind:
Puppy Stage (0–12 months):
Get ready for full-blown puppy energy! Expect plenty of zoomies, chewing, curiosity, and excitement over everything. This is the time to start basic training and establish a routine.
Adolescence (1–2 years):
This stage can be a bit wild. Goldendoodles are still growing, testing limits, and figuring out the world. They have bursts of energy that can feel nonstop—but this is also when consistent training starts to pay off.
Young Adult (2–3 years):
You’ll begin to notice a difference. Your Goldendoodle may still be playful and happy—but the extreme puppy energy starts to mellow. They become more responsive, relaxed, and better at settling down.
Adulthood (3+ years):
Most Goldendoodles hit their calm, balanced stride around age 3. They still enjoy walks, playtime, and mental challenges, but they’re much more chill in between.
Tips to Help Your Goldendoodle Calm Down (Even Sooner!)
You don’t have to wait years for some peace—there’s a lot you can do to guide your pup toward calmer behavior earlier:
✔️ Daily Exercise
Goldendoodles thrive on movement. A tired doodle is a well-behaved doodle. Regular walks, backyard play, and even a good game of fetch go a long way.
✔️ Mental Stimulation
Training sessions, puzzle toys, and learning new tricks help channel that big brain of theirs and reduce boredom-based energy.
✔️ Consistent Routine
Goldendoodles respond well to structure. Feeding, walks, playtime, and bedtime at the same time each day help regulate behavior.
✔️ Early Socialization
Exposing your pup to new people, places, and pets early on builds confidence and reduces hyperactivity in unfamiliar situations.
✔️ Training + Patience
Start young and stay consistent! Simple commands like “settle” and “place” are great tools for teaching calm behavior.
Fun Fact: Training Makes a BIG Difference!
Many of our KZ Doodles families notice a huge shift once their puppy goes through basic training. That’s why we offer training options for families who want a more polished pup from day one!
Calmer Days Are Coming
Yes, Goldendoodles have energy—but that energy becomes joyfully manageable with time, love, and guidance. Around 2 to 3 years old, you’ll start seeing a calmer, more focused doodle who still loves to play but also knows how to chill with you on the couch.
Until then, hang in there—and enjoy the ride! Those zoomies won’t last forever, but the love your Goldendoodle brings absolutely will.
